Ty Gibbs spins as Joe Gibbs Racing teammates cause wreck in Cabo Wabo 250
The Joe Gibbs Racing team meeting will be awkward on Monday. Ty Gibbs will have choice words for his NASCAR Xfinity Series teammates. In the first stage o the Cabo Wabo 250, Gibbs was leading the JGR pack and running well. That’s when things started to get a little wild.
Ty Gibbs was being pushed by John Hunter Nemechek who had Sammy Smith behind him. Gibbs appeared to get a little loose, Nemechek kept coming and then, everyone was spinning out. It was an unfortunate turn of events.
Carson Hocevar would receive heavy damage to his Chevy. He’s had terrible luck in the Xfinity Series. Gibbs was not happy with Nemechek after this, the two drivers and teammates have had run-ins in the past.
Just 11 laps into this race, chaos. Ty Gibbs wasn’t too damaged by the incident.
Josh Berry won the pole for the Cabo Wabo 250. However, Justin Allgaier showed that his car was perhaps the best on the grid. At least, in the first stage. Meanwhile, Ty Gibbs and John Hunter Nemechek are working their way on fighting back to the front.
This is a double-duty weekend for Gibbs. He hopes to do well in this race, but Sunday is the ain’t event of the weekend. The playoffs are on the line.

Ty Gibbs on the verge of Cup Series Playoffs
While the Xfinity Series race is fun and all, the real goal is to make the playoffs in the Cup Series. Ty Gibbs is 17th overall and just 18 points from the cutline in the points standings. With a P3 starting position for the FireKeepers Casino 400, Gibbs is in a good position to compete for a win.
Win and you’re in. Otherwise, it is all about picking up points and advancing over Michael McDowell. Michigan seems to be a track that Gibbs likes to race on. He was fast in qualifying and came up just short in the final round when it came to winning the pole.
The good news is that Gibbs’ teammate Christopher Bell is the pole sitter. The two JGR teammates could talk about what they think they need to do in order to win. Martin Truex Jr. starts P5 and is returning for the 2024 season. Meanwhile, Denny Hamlin will fire off P13.
All of that waits for Ty Gibbs tomorrow. For now, he will try to recover from this early wreck and come away with the Cabo Wabo 250 trophy.
