Tyler O’Neill hits Opening Day home run for sixth-straight season

Opening Day is a special occasion in the sports world. Baseball is finally back after a long offseason, marking the beginning of a long year through the World Series in October. Fans across the continent are happy to have Opening Day here but not as much as Tyler O’Neill.
Entering Thursday, O’Neill had hit an Opening Day home run in five consecutive years. The streak has been extended to six with a three-run home run for Baltimore against Toronto. O’Neill added to the Orioles’ lead, making it 5-0 early in the third inning, to go along with the personal achievement.
“He’s done it again,” Baltimore play-by-play announcer Kevin Brown said. “The unstoppable Opening Day machine. Tyler O’Neill has homered for a sixth consecutive year on Opening Day. This time, he does it in his home country.”
O’Neill’s streak goes back to the shortened 2020 season with the St. Louis Cardinals. They enjoyed four of those Opening Day home runs before O’Neill joined the Boston Red Sox in 2024. A three-year contract with Baltimore is off to a flying start with the home run.
For Toronto, this is actually the second time they have been on the receiving end during O’Neill’s streak. St. Louis began the 2023 season against the Blue Jays at Busch Stadium. Alek Manoah was on the mound a couple years ago while Jose Berrios was pitching Thursday afternoon.
The home run hitting record for O’Neill is a weird one. Last season in Boston saw 31 home runs leave the park, just shy of his career-high 34 in 2021. Outside of those two, O’Neill has only surpassed the double-digit mark once in his career.

Opening Day is his day, though. Everyone will be tuning into Baltimore’s Opening Day game in 2026, seeing if O’Neill can do the unthinkable again.
MLB.TV experiencing outages on Opening Day
Unless someone was in the Baltimore or Toronto area, there was no way to watch O’Neill hit his home run. Fans outside of the local broadcasts usually log into MLB.TV to tune into games but Thursday has been a disaster.
MLB.TV was down with the majority of Opening Day’s game getting underway. Unexpectedly, social media was quick to point things out and have some words for Major League Baseball.
As time passed, getting closer to 5 p.m. ET, the service was back up and running. Baseball fans can exhale as our national pastime is officially back.
