Ahead of the Miami Dolphins’ 20-17 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, wide receiver Tyreek Hill was detained by the Miami-Dade Police Department. Shortly after the incident, Miami-Dade Police Department director Stephanie V. Daniels released a statement, revealing one of the officers involved in the detainment had been placed on administrative leave.

“Following the incident involving Tyreek Hill, I have initiated an Internal Affairs investigation to ensure a thorough review of the matter,” Daniels wrote. “One of the officers involved in the incident has been placed on administrative duties while the investigation is conducted I’m committed to transparency and accountability to the community with any situation involving my officers.”

Hill didn’t allow the disruption before the game to distract him. The six-time All-Pro hauled in seven catches for a game-high 130 receiving yards and a touchdown. Hill celebrated an 80-yard touchdown catch with a handcuff-themed celebration, poking fun at the incident earlier in the day.

Daniels’ statement after the game wasn’t her first of the day. Immediately following the news of Hill’s detainment, Daniels released a statement, addressing the situation.

Further information on Tyreek Hill’s detainment

“We are aware of the recent detainment of Miami Dolphins player Tyreek Hill by Miami-Dade Police Department officers,” the statement read. “I have requested an immediate review of all details surrounding the incident, and we are also reviewing available body camera footage. We will provide updates as further information becomes available.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Jeff Darlington reported Hill was cited for reckless driving after being pulled over for speeding. Hill and police had a verbal altercation which led to the star wide receiver being put in handcuffs.

Hill’s agent Drew Rosenhaus called the entire situation “mind-boggling” when he spoke live on ESPN pregame.

“It’s a heartbreaking situation,” Rosenhaus said. “How things escalated into the situation that they were in handcuffs and being held on the ground with police is mind-boggling to me.

“I’m deeply concerned by that, very troubled. We will be looking into it, we will be investigating this, we will look out for Tyreek, but I’m not going to make any allegations at this time. The most important thing is Tyreek is OK.”
