Miami Dolphins star receiver Tyreek Hill was detained by police before Sunday’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, placed down on the pavement outside his car and put in handcuffs.

According to the team, the incident with Hill stemmed from a minor traffic violation.

After being released, Hill went on to play in the game against the Jaguars, even scoring a touchdown and accounting for a game-high seven catches for 130 yards. After the game, he addressed his detainment and said he hoped the incident, which was caught on camera and quickly went viral, could be a learning moment.

“Everybody has bad apples in every situation, so I want to be able to use this platform to figure out a way to like flip this and make it a positive on both ends,” Tyreek Hill said. “On my end and also Miami-Dade, so that way we can continue together and do something positive for the community, because that’s what it’s all about, man.

“You guys are here to protect us as individuals, and I have a platform and I want to be able to team up with you guys. That’s all I’ve got to say.”

As to what led to Hill being taken to the ground and handcuffed over a minor traffic violation, the Miami receiver mostly punted. He wasn’t sure.

“I have no idea, for real. No idea. No idea, man,” Tyreek Hill said. “It’s crazy. No idea. I wasn’t disrespectful, you know, because my mom didn’t raise me that way. Didn’t cuss. Didn’t do none of that. Like I said, I’m still trying to figure it out, man.”

Hill wasn’t the only Miami Dolphins player involved in the morning incident, as defensive lineman Calais Campbell revealed after the game that he was also placed into handcuffs while trying to de-escalate the situation.

For his part, Hill simply went about his business after the stop, but it meant a lot to him to see teammates like Campbell try to intervene. The stop was off his mind by the time kickoff rolled around.

“You know what, the thing about me, man, I have a great support system at home, man, from my wife and my mom and then even when I come inside the locker room, my teammates, man,” Tyreek Hill said. “So I was able to pray with my family, able to talk with my wife, calmed down a little bit and I was straight, man. Because I know at the end of the day I still have a job to do. If he come in, he drop three passes, is he still thinking about the little scenario?

“Nobody thinking about that, man. I’ve still got a job to do. I’ve got a family to feed. I’ve got to be a leader for this team. I’ve got to find ways to bounce through adversity no matter whenever it hits.”

Hill was unaware after the game that one of the officers from the morning incident had been placed on administrative duties.

“Nah, I wasn’t, I wasn’t. That should tell you everything you need to know then,” Tyreek Hill said. “You feel me? It should tell you everything you need to know. So that’s all I’m going to say about that situation.

“I’m just glad my teammates were there to support me in that situation, because I felt alone. When they showed up, it made me realize that we’ve got a fucking good team this year, dawg. For them to put their life on the line, you know what I’m saying. So it was amazing to see, man.”
