“Before the Dolphins game yesterday, an incident occurred where Tyreek Hill was placed in handcuffs before being released,” the statement read. “First, to be clear, at no time was he ever under arrest. He was briefly detained for officer safety, after driving in a manner in which he was putting himself and others in great risk of danger.

“Upon being stopped, Mr. Hill was not immediately cooperative with the officers on scene who, pursuant to policy and for their immediate safety, placed Mr. Hill in handcuffs. Mr. Hill, still uncooperative, refused to sit on the ground and was therefore redirected to the ground. Once the situation was sorted out within a few minutes, Mr. Hill was issued two traffic citations and was free to leave.

“We would like to stress to the community to use this as an opportunity to remember that is is always best to obey lawful police commands first and complain later. We have worked hard across all communities to bridge the gap between what people believe law enforcement should and can do, and will continue to do so. In this case, while we will wait for the investigation to run its course, based on what we know, we stand with the actions of our officers but look forward to further open communication moving forward.

“While we are confident in the actions that led to the stop of Mr. Hill, as with any investigation, we will wait for all of the facts to come out, along with any explanation Mr. Hill may have for his actions that initiated this unfortunate incident.”

Shortly after the incident, Miami-Dade Police Department director Stephanie V. Daniels released a statement, revealing one of the officers involved in the detainment had been placed on administrative leave.

“Following the incident involving Tyreek Hill, I have initiated an Internal Affairs investigation to ensure a thorough review of the matter,” Daniels wrote. “One of the officers involved in the incident has been placed on administrative duties while the investigation is conducted I’m committed to transparency and accountability to the community with any situation involving my officers.”

Hill didn’t allow the disruption before the game to distract him. The six-time All-Pro hauled in seven catches for a game-high 130 receiving yards and a touchdown. Hill celebrated an 80-yard touchdown catch with a handcuff-themed celebration, poking fun at the incident earlier in the day.

Daniels’ statement after the game wasn’t her first of the day. Immediately following the news of Hill’s detainment, Daniels released a statement, addressing the situation.

Hill’s agent Drew Rosenhaus called the entire situation “mind-boggling” when he spoke live on ESPN pregame.

“It’s a heartbreaking situation,” Rosenhaus said. “How things escalated into the situation that they were in handcuffs and being held on the ground with police is mind-boggling to me.

“I’m deeply concerned by that, very troubled. We will be looking into it, we will be investigating this, we will look out for Tyreek, but I’m not going to make any allegations at this time. The most important thing is Tyreek is OK.”
