Undisputed light-heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev calls out Jake Paul, seemingly offers title shot after Mike Tyson fight
Light-heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev called out Jake Paul following the latter’s win over Mike Tyson Friday night.
The sanctioned bout, which pitted a 27-year old Paul against a 58-year old Tyson, was a hyped event at least on paper. But Paul’s fought one boxing match against a current fighter with the rest being retired or semi-retired MMA fighters.
Now Beterbiev, serious or not, offered Paul a shot at the belt.
“What can you do in ring against the current undisputed champion,” Beterbiev wrote in an Instagram story. Just know that I’m always open to any suggestions.”
There’s no doubt Paul’s publicity led to some big pay days for his fights, but he’s made it a clear he’s serious about boxing and wants to eventually work up to a title.
Could this be a shortcut to get there? It could if this fight is actually put together. But comparing the resumes, it’s a stark contrast.
Beterbiev is 21-0 in his career and the current holder of the WBC, IBF, WBO, WBA and IBO light-heavyweight titles. So basically, he’s the man.
Paul already called out UFC superstar Conor McGregor to a fight in the octagon, rather than the ring. So who knows where Paul goes next?
The heavyweight matchup between Paul and Tyson had been a long time coming. It was initially scheduled for July 20 but was rescheduled after Tyson suffered an ulcer flare-up on a May 26 flight from Miami to Los Angeles.

Tyson’s doctors forced him to limit training for several weeks to allow his ulcer to flare up.
After Paul’s win on Friday evening, Tyson will have other bumps and bruises to address. It was an eight-round bout between the two icons, with the 27-year-old Paul getting the better of 58-year-old Tyson. Netflix live-streamed the event, the first time the company has done so for a sporting event.
Tyson burst out of the starting gates, finding more significant strikes early against Paul. However, his age began to show after the first two rounds, with commentator and boxing legend Roy Jones Jr. repeatedly pointing out Tyson’s lack of stability in his legs.
Paul took advantage of Tyson’s subpar agility, dancing around the ring and throwing jabs from a distance. When the two did engage, Tyson struggled to land a massive punch due to his fatigue.
Despite the heated lead-up to the fight, Paul showed respect in the closing moments of the eighth round, bowing to Tyson. The New York native returned the favor, reaching out his hand to Paul.
