Urban Meyer played a pivotal role in the football career of Joe Burrow. While the star quarterback never blossomed into the leader of Ohio State, the Buckeyes made a gigantic impact on his career.

Famously, Burrow attended Ohio State, but transferred after being beaten out for the starting gig by Dwayne Haskins. In an appearance on Don’t @ Me with Dan Dakich, Meyer detailed his relationship with Burrow.

“Joe Burrow — we recruited him out of high school. Not heavily recruited. Came on to out campus, was a great basketball player in high school. So, he was a little bit underdeveloped,” stated Meyer regarding the Cincinnati Bengals quarterback. “Never had spring practice. Was a little underdeveloped, but you saw his body start to mature. He trained as hard as anybody I’ve ever seen. His maturity and toughness were very unique. By his second or third year, you could start seeing this guy develop into something special.

“He got into a one-time shot with Dwayne Haskins in spring practice. Dwayne beat him – it was very close – Dwayne had a little bit better stats. Plus Dwayne beat the rival the year before. .. We remained very close. He went on to LSU. Had a work-man like first year, but then one of the best years in college football history.”

While Meyer and Burrow weren’t able to take Ohio State to the promise-land, the quarterback was able to find it on his own. Still, it’s evident the quarterback made an impact on the former Buckeyes coach.

Meyer on Burrow: ‘I see a little bit of Tom Brady now.’

Furthermore, Urban Meyer paid Joe Burrow the best compliment a quarterback can receive. When detailing his development, Meyer stated that Burrow reminds him of Seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady.

“When you watch him play, I see a little bit of Tom Brady now,” Meyer stated. “I’m seeing a guy — I’m not saying he’s Tom Brady. But I’m just seeing — the greatness of Tom Brady. I’ve studied him for many years. When I was at Florida and Ohio State, I’d go watch him practice. Tom was the most competitive. I mean, it was minicamp and it was like the Super Bowl. His competitive spirt, his leadership, his toughness. He holds everyone him accountable, and he makes everyone around him better.

“I’m starting to see that about Joe Burrow. .. His ability to handle pressure, and still remain confident without being overbearing.”

In his second season in the league, Joe Burrow has already taken the Cincinnati Bengals to the AFC Championship Game. Evidently, the football world should get used to seeing Burrow on the biggest stages imaginable.
