Cavaliers, Jazz complete massive trade involving Donovan Mitchell, Collin Sexton, Ochai Agbaji
Donovan Mitchell is finally on the move. After an up-and-down season for the Jazz in 2022, the team decided to move on from its multiple-time All-Star duo of Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell. They moved Gobert to the Timberwolves earlier this summer. And now, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reports that Mitchell will be traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Here was the initial report, which he tweeted:
“The Cleveland Cavaliers have acquired Donovan Mitchell in a trade, sources tell ESPN.”
Woj then updated the deal with the full details of the trade, identifying several Cavaliers that will be sent back to the Jazz in return from Mitchell, including former Kansas rookie Ochai Agbaji, along with others and a number of draft picks. Here was that tweet:
“Full trade: Utah is trading Donovan Mitchell to Cleveland for Lauri Markkanen, Ochair Agbaji, Collin Sexton, three unprotected first-round picks and two pick swaps, sources tell ESPN.”
Recap
Mitchell to Cleveland. A boat-load of players and picks to the Utah Jazz, who are the latest NBA team to completely sellout for younger players and, more importantly, a war chest full of future draft picks to replenish the next era of their franchise with.

Michigan prepared to offer No. 1 recruit $10.5M over 4 years
After five years, three All-Star appearances and five straight Playoff appearances with Utah, Donovan Mitchell moves on. The move to Cleveland is a shock for sure, but the move in general is not. Mitchell and the Jazz have been at odds for some time now. Gobert was a large part of Mitchell’s displeasure. However, even with him gone, the team is in no shape to compete for a title. So a divorce was best for both sides at this point.
For the Cavaliers, their biggest and best move post-LeBron on the trade/free agency front. They broke through last year with an exciting young core and just added a superstar that turns just 26 years old in a week.
