Oklahoma State kicks off its 2024 Big 12 Conference schedule against the Utah Utes in a ranked battle between two teams hoping to end up in the first 12-team College Football Playoff by the end of the season.

Week 4’s conference matchup will be the second time in either program’s history that the two teams will meet. The first game happened just over a month after the end of World War II in 1945. The Cowboys would win the game at home 46-6. Of course, that final nearly 80 years ago is not indicative of where these two programs stand now.

Both looking like legitimate contenders for the Big 12 title this season, and this early season matchup may have major implications down the line. Utah is already 1-0 in conference play after defeating Baylor 23-12 in Week 2, and Oklahoma State can jump out ahead of them early with a win on Saturday.

According to FanDuel Sportsbook, Oklahoma State has opened as a 2.5-point favorite at home against Utah. The over/under point total is set at 53.5.

The biggest factor for the Cowboys against the Utes will be matching up for the first time against veteran quarterback Cam Rising.

The veteran Utes quarterback suffered a significant knee injury against Penn State in the 2022 Rose Bowl. He tore his ACL, MCL, meniscus and MPFL and was forced to sit out for the entire 2023 season while he recovered.

Rising is one of the oldest players in college football, originally being a member of the 2018 recruiting class. He transferred to Utah from Texas ahead of the 2020 season but did not become the full-time starter until the year after. Before his injury, Rising has dbeen one of the more consistent quarterbacks in college football.

Before returning for the 2024 season, Rising played in 27 games, where he has totaled over 700 pass attempts. He threw for over 3,000 yards in 2022 before his injury in the final game of the season. He’s thrown for over 5,500 yards in his career to go with a strong touchdown to interception ratio, throwing for 46 scores and turning the ball over just 14 times.

Losing that key piece was monumental for how Utah’s season panned out in 2023, but the Utes figure to be a strong matchup against Oklahoma State in Week 4 behind his lead.
