While The Masters holds the reputation as the most prestigious major championship in golf, the U.S. Open is regarded as the sport’s toughest challenge. That appears to ring true again in 2023.

With the U.S. Open starting on Thursday, practice rounds are underway at the Los Angeles Country Club. And, like usual, players will be battling some tough course elements.

Videos popped up on social media, highlighting the treacherous conditions in the rough this week. Instead of irons and wedges, golfers might want to think about packing weed-eaters and lawnmowers.

Just that video shows how tall the LACC is allowing the grass to grow. It’s going to make it incredibly difficult for chipping — or even longer iron shots.

Below are more videos, showing just how tough the conditions are coming this week:

Yikes.

Golfers are going to have to muscle a lot of shots if they find themselves in the thick stuff at this year’s U.S. Open. But, hey, this is a major championship.

And this kind of environment isn’t unusual, by the way. Courses notoriously make conditions more difficult when the U.S. Open comes to town. There’s a reason carding an even par in this tournament is considered a strong score.

The 123rd U.S. Open begins on Thursday, June 15 from the Los Angeles Country Club.

2023 U.S. Open odds

Two major championships are in the books. Jon Rahm won his second major and first green jacket with a victory at The Masters back in April. Brooks Koepka ended a four-year major drought in May by winning the PGA Championship.

Who will take home the trophy from the U.S. Open at the Los Angeles Country Club? BetMGM released the odds for this year’s event. Here’s a rundown of the golfers with the best odds:

  • Scottie Scheffler: +700
  • Jon Rahm: +1000
  • Brooks Koepka: +1100
  • Rory McIlroy: +1100
  • Patrick Cantlay: +1600
  • Viktor Hovland: +1600
  • Xander Schauffele: +1800
  • Jordan Spieth: +2000
  • Cameron Smith: +2800
  • Max Homa: +2800

Last year, Matt Fitzpatrick won the U.S. Open at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass. It was the first time in his career he’d won a major championship.

Scheffler, the player with the best odds, finished second in last year’s tournament. Rahm and Koepka are both searching for their second major victory in 2023. McIlroy hopes to win his first major event since 2014.

It should make for a compelling weekend from Los Angeles.
