Moreover, the rivalry transcends the gridiron. The two athletic programs face off across all 22 sports each university offers. Virginia even has a page on its website dedicated to the rivalry game. There, you can see all the upcoming matchups between the two programs.
The rivalry is officially labeled the Commonwealth Clash, and it even has its own sponsor in Smithfield.
The Cavaliers already hold a 5-0 lead against the Hokies this calendar year in the series, seeing Virginia sweep the two-game season series in volleyball against Virginia Tech and was aided in cross country and both soccer teams. After the football game on Nov. 30, the rivalry won’t be renewed until mid-January when the two schools compete in swimming & diving.
Whichever program earns 11 wins first across all sports is awarded a trophy called The Clash. Virginia has won it in each of the last two seasons and is off to a fast start to the 2024-25 athletic calendar, including 15-7 during 2023-24.
