More on Virginia Tech vs. Vanderbilt

Virginia Tech will begin their fall in which they could be one of the top teams out of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The Hokies, who enter their third season under Brent Pry, saw a four-win improvement from a 3-8 record from his debut in 2022 to a 7-6 finish in 2023. That includes victories in five of their final seven with one of those being in their bowl game.

Now, VT returns basically all of their starting lineup from both sides of the ball for this possibly very successful season in Blacksburg.

As for Vanderbilt, this game is important for them too in how their season goes.

FanDuel has the Commodores’ win-total set at just 2.5 games for 2024. They still play non-conference games against Alcorn State, Georgia State, and Ball State but will go on to play a league slate that’s among the more challenging in the nation with five opponents in the Preseason Top-25.

That means this could end up being a crucial year in their fourth under Clark Lea. Vandy did go 5-7 in 2022 but has gone just 2-10 in each of 2021 and 2023, including being just 2-22 in the SEC in his three years. Another poor finish, especially that low of just two or three games, could mean changes to come, which makes starting on the right foot against a very good opponent potentially all the more important.

ESPN will begin their coverage of week one with Virginia Tech and Vanderbilt. Only one of those is leaving with the opening win, though, to get their important seasons, although for different reasons, off right.
