The Washington Commanders are reportedly cutting quarterback Jake Fromm ahead of the NFL’s roster deadline on Tuesday, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport.

Although Fromm had a strong preseason, passing for 235 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions in the last two games, the Commanders are moving forward with Sam Howell and veteran Jacoby Brissett.

Fromm has bounced around the league a little bit since being drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He played for the Bills one season – serving as the team’s COVID emergency quarterback – before the New York Giants signed him from the Bills practice squad in 2021.

Fromm made a couple of starts for the New York Giants in place of Daniel Jones before signing with the Washington Commanders for 2022. In three games played in the league, he has 27 completions for 210 yards and three interceptions with one touchdown.

The NFL’s roster deadline to cut the list down from 90 to 53 men is on Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET.

On Monday, the Commanders released 11 other players.

Once the Commanders get the roster down to 53, they can then designate another 16 players for the practice squad. Teams will continue to move players around until the games kickoff in Week 1.

Commanders tab Howell as starter for 2023

Washington Commanders head coach Ron Rivera announced after the second preseason game that second-year quarterback Sam Howell had earned the starting job for the 2023 season.

Howell had limited action as a rookie. He went 11-of-19 passing (57.9%) for 169 touchdowns, one touchdown and one interception. He threw his lone touchdown of the season against the Dallas Cowboys in the season finale during the 2022 campaign. The rookie also rushed for 35 yards and an additional rushing touchdown.

The Washington Commanders drafted Howell out of North Carolina with the first pick in the fifth round, which was pick No. 144 overall.

In his college career, Howell was prolific. Although his passing statistics dipped after his freshman year, he was one of the best quarterbacks in program history. He finished his collegiate career with 10,283 yards, 92 touchdowns, 23 interceptions and a 63.8% completion percentage.
