Report: Washington Commanders finalizing deal to hire Eric Bieniemy as offensive coordinator
Eric Bieniemy is closing in on a major move. The Washington Commanders are finalizing a deal to make him their next offensive coordinator, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported.
Bieniemy, whose name has come up in head coaching circles multiple times over the last few cycles, just wrapped up his fifth season as the Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator. He helped Kansas City to two Super Bowls during his time in the role, including this year’s victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. Earlier this offseason, he interviewed for the Indianapolis Colts head coaching opening before they hired Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen.
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero also reported Bieniemy will be Ron Rivera’s assistant head coach and will sign a multi-year deal. Although the Chiefs wanted to keep him around after winning the Super Bowl, he opted to take the new title and build a staff in Washington.
Bieniemy will replace Scott Turner, who parted ways with the Commanders after three years as their offensive coordinator. This past season, Washington went 8-8-1 in 2022 and ranked 24th in scoring offense with 18.9 points per game.

Following his time in California, Bieniemy went to the NFL to coach with the Minnesota Vikings in the same role coaching the backfield, the old position of his playing days. From 2006-09, Bieniemy was on staff before being promoted to assistant head coach in 2010.
The coach returned to his alma mater in 2011 for two seasons as the offensive coordinator but eventually came back to the NFL in 2013 with the Chiefs.
Bieniemy had a different type of opportunity at a head coaching gig in 2020 when Colorado reached out to him about the job, but he ultimately turned it down.
