Washington Football Team reveals list of eight potential names
13 months after the rebranding process began, the Washington Football Team is one step closer to finalizing its name change.
The Football Team released a shortlist of eight names on Tuesday via their YouTube channel, from which they’ll decide on a final name:
Washington Armada
Washington Presidents
Washington Brigade
Washington Redhogs
Washington Commanders
Washington Redwolves
Washington Defenders
Washington Football Team
Washington has been teasing at the potential new name through a YouTube series titled, “Making the Brand.” In Monday’s episode, fans were shown each of the eight names on the scoreboard at FedEx Field. Their reactions were mixed.
“It sounds like name that would be out of, like, a low-budget movie,” one fan said in response to the name Washington Presidents.
“I like the Washington Football Team, I don’t care what anyone says,” another fan remarked after being shown the name — which could remain unchanged.
Some of the new names, including Washington Commanders, were met with a positive reaction from fans.
“I like that. We’re going to command some respect,” a fan said after Commanders was illuminated on the scoreboard.

After the fans were shown the team names, the board projected various logos for them to see.
Later in the video, team president Jason Wright is shown sharing some names with head coach Ron Rivera. Rivera’s proceeds to look at blurred out sheets of paper, presumably containing the logo concepts, and comments on each one after its displayed. But the name he’s actually talking about is redacted.
At the end of the video, however, Wright is shown revealing a list of three finalists to Rivera.
Though the three finalists are also redacted, The Washington Post was able to confirm that the initial list of eight was narrowed down to three.
It’s only a matter of time before the Washington Football Team decides on its brand for the future. It could keep what was originally its temporary name, Washington Football Team, or it could pivot to any of the aforementioned names.
The Football Team first began reviewing its previous name on July 3, 2020, and on July 23, 2020, the organization put out a press release that they would operate under the name “Washington Football Team” in 2020.
“For updated brand clarity and consistency purposes, we will call ourselves the ‘Washington Football Team’ pending adoption of our new name,” it read. “The Redskins name and logo will officially be retired by the start of the 2020 season.”
