During the third quarter of Sunday’s game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New Orleans Saints, the officials gathered to make a critical on-field call, then overturned it. After replay, the referee determined the Buccaneers fumble was in fact an incomplete pass.

On first-and-10 from the Saints 13-yard line, Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady hit running back Leonard Fournette across the middle. He turned up field toward the empty endzone but dropped the ball on his way to the goal line. Saints safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson scooped up the ball and attempted to advance. However, he fumbled himself and fell on the ball again inside the endzone.

The play was ruled a catch and fumble by Fournette, recovered by Gardner-Johnson for a touchback. Like all NFL turnovers, the play went under review.

The referee overturned the call on the field, giving the ball back to the Buccaneers at the 13-yard line after an incomplete pass. Brady led the Buccaneers into the endzone for a score, cutting the Saints lead to single-digits.

Former NFL official weighs in

Former NFL official and NBC Sunday Night Football rules expert Terry McAulay also weighed in on the controversial call Sunday afternoon, siding with the replay official. According the McAulay, the review process succeeded in finding the correct call.

“Incomplete pass,” McAulay posted on Twitter. “Loses the ball as the second step comes down after control. Does not perform an act common to the game.”

Saints lose quarterback Jameis Winston

New Orleans Saints quarterback Jameis Winston had to be helped off the field against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following an awkward tackle that appeared to injure his leg and ankle. Following a scramble out of the pocket, Winston was brought down by a horse collar tackle. He appeared to injure his some part of his leg on the replay.

Jameis Winston was taken for further evaluation in the blue medical tent on the sideline. He was held in the tent for a long time as a motorized cart waited for him outside of it. Teammates Alvin Kamara and Terron Armstead were seen walking into the tent to check on him.

Through the first six games of the 2021 season, Winston has impressed with his decision making as the Saints have achieved a 4-2 record. Winston had thrown 13 touchdowns to just 3 interceptions coming into Sunday’s game, and also posted a passer rating over 100 in four games.
