Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott thought he was receiving a heartwarming gift from his offensive line when running back Ezekiel Elliott slammed birthday cake in the quarterback’s face. Video of the incident was put out by NFL Films to promote the release of this season’s Hard Knocks series, which follows the Cowboys through training camp.

Prescott and Elliott have been together through their entire NFL careers, both joining the Cowboys in the 2016 NFL Draft. La’el Collins, seen holding the cake in the video, has been with the Cowboys since 2015 and has served as an anchor on the offensive line over the past six seasons.

Injury update

Prescott did not appear in the Cowboys preseason opener against the Steelers. He continues to rehab a serious ankle injury from 2020 and a shoulder injury sustained this offseason.

“I’m just staying back, getting myself healthy, doing all the things necessary to get myself back on the field as soon as I can with my teammates,” Prescott said during a live interview on FOX. “Now it’s just about getting the shoulder behind me. And we’re just being cautious, we’re taking it day-by-day. Obviously, it’s five weeks before the season opener, so got a lot of time and I’m going to use that time to get myself ready for that game.”

The Cowboys will play three more preseason games this month, giving Prescott a chance to see live reps. He is currently not expected to miss time during the regular season.

New Contract

The Cowboys long-term investment in Prescott is part of the reason for their caution with Prescott. The team does not want to play him until every ache has gone away. This offseason, Dak Prescott got an early birthday present when he signed an extension with the Cowboys. The deal is for four years, $160 million, according to Front Office Sports.

Around $40 per year is a steep price to pay but it was necessary to build a contender. Prescott has been one of the best investments made by the Cowboys over the past 25 years.

After falling to Dallas in the fourth round, Prescott took over the starting job in year one and has never looked back. He had thrown for 17,634 yards with 106 touchdowns and 40 interceptions over the past five seasons. Prescott has added more than 1,000 yards on the ground and 24 rushing touchdowns over his career.
