After a night where he set a franchise record for points scored, Minnesota Timberwolves star Karl-Anthony Towns had a special reaction to his achievement during the third quarter. Towns scored 32 points in the third quarter alone on Monday night, scoring 56 points and tying his own franchise record before the fourth quarter even began. He finished the night with a new franchise record for points scored in a game with 60 points and 17 rebounds.

Karl-Anthony Towns’ reaction to his historic night

After the game, Towns was told during his on-court interview that he had scored 32 points in the third quarter and he could not contain his excitement at the news. As the interviewer tried to finish her question, Towns talked over her asking if it was true because he couldn’t believe it.

“I had 32 in the third? I had 32 in the third — Damn.”

The hilarious moment appears to show just how locked in he was during the game, and that somehow nobody on his team brought up his nearly record-setting quarter. Towns left the game in the fourth quarter with a comfortable lead but checked back in before the game was over, possibly in an attempt to make his 56-point total a nice round 60 points.

Towns in rare company

His 32-point quarter set the stage for an incredible finish to his night, ending the game with 60 points and 17 rebounds. For historical context, 60 points and 17 rebound nights have only happened a handful of times by the majority of the NBA, outside of the legendary Wilt Chamberlain. The only players who have ever reached the lofty stat line that Towns posted on Monday are Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal, Karl Malone, George Mikan and Elgin Baylor.

Except for Baylor, each player that has recorded a 60 point, 17 rebound night has done so only once. Baylor accomplished the incredible feat four times. Almost comically, Wilt Chamberlain recorded a 60-17 stat line a monstrous 30 times over his career.

Towns’ final stat line for the night was 60 points, 17 rebounds and three assists. Towns shot 19-of-31 from the field, 7-of-11 from three-point range, and 15-of-16 from the free throw line.
