WATCH: Rex Ryan makes eye-popping comparison for Joe Burrow
Former NFL head coach Rex Ryan just gave Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow a very lofty comparison. Ryan said that Burrow reminds him of Tom Brady, one of the greatest players in NFL history. The Bengals just defeated the Baltimore Ravens to improve to 5-2 and take hold of first place in the AFC North.
“I hate him ’cause he’s not on my team,” Ryan said of Burrow. “I would love him if he was on my team. He reminds me so dang much of Tom Brady in every single way. The way he looks, the way he can throw the football, the way he conducts himself. Everything about him reminds me of Tom Brady.”
Burrow is coming off of a career performance against the Ravens. In the Bengals’ 41-17 win, Burrow completed 23 of his 38 passes for 416 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception. On the season, Burrow is completing nearly 70 percent of his passes for 1,956 yards, 17 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.
The Bengals selected Burrow first overall after he put up historic numbers on LSU’s undefeated run to a national championship in 19. That year, Burrow threw for 5,671 yards, 60 touchdowns, and six interceptions, also adding 13 scores on the ground.

This isn’t the first lofty comparison to legendary quarterbacks for Burrow
Phil Simms recently compared Burrow to legendary NFL quarterback Joe Montana. Montana is a Hall of Famer, made eight pro bowls, and was a three time All-Pro. He won four Super Bowl and won two MVP awards. In his career, Montana threw for 40,551 yards and 273 touchdowns, adding 20 rushing scores. Burrow is clearly far form Montana’s level at this point, but the high praise continues rolling in for good reason.
“He’s the modern day Joe Montana,” Simms said of Burrow. “That’s how I look at him. Smooth, graceful, maybe a little more athletic than Joe Montana was. He probably has a little bit of a stronger arm than Joe Montana too. He just has a feel for the position. I hate to say that, it’s hard to explain, but he’s got it. His movement, his throwing, his experience at LSU, and (Bengals head coach) Zac Taylor has done a great job devising an offense that’s more diverse and helping out Joe Burrow.”
Burrow has now thrown multiple touchdowns in every game this season. When he did so in the sixth game of the season, he became the second quarterback in his first or second season to throw multiple touchdowns in each of his team’s first six games. Burrow joined Dan Marino as the only quarterbacks in NFL history to do so.
