A surprising visitor joined in on the action during the women’s surfing semifinals at the 2024 Paris Olympics. A whale was videoed splashing around in the ocean in Tahiti as contestants competed.

You can check out video of the competition, with the whale joining in, below:

The whale splashed around as Tatiana Weston-Webb of Brazil and Brisa Hennessy of Costa Rica competed in the surfing semifinals. Weston-Webb ended up advancing to the finals. However, she lost to Caroline Marks of the United States and brought home the silver medal instead.

As you can see in the video, Weston-Webb and Hennessy are swimming out into the ocean when the whale jumps up and slams itself down on its back.

The announcers can be heard in the background saying: “Wow. That’s incredible. That’s a 10 right there. That’s a perfect 10.”

While the majority of the Olympics are taking place in Paris, the surfing competition was held in Tahiti. It didn’t disappoint as Carolina Marks narrowly edged Tatiana Weston-Webb 10.50 to 10.33 for the women’s surfing gold medal.

Of course a whale splashing around during Olympic surfing competition only added to the fun.

Sophia Smith scores go-ahead goal for Team USA in semi-final versus Germany

Elsewhere at the Olympics, Team USA women’s soccer is a step away from the finals in Paris thanks to star forward Sophia Smith. On her birthday, Smith scored the go-ahead goal for the women’s national soccer team just as they began the first extra time period after the end of regulation against Germany.

The former Stanford standout found herself on side as her teammate Mallory Swanson slotted in a perfect ball through the center in front of the goal. She struck across the face of the goal for the first point of the match.

The semi-final matchup against Germany is Smith’s 55th cap for Team USA and her ninth consecutive start. USA ended up holding on through extra time to advance to the gold medal game against the winner of the semi-final between Brazil and Spain.

In the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, Team USA fell in the semi-final against Canada. They went on to win a bronze medal with a 4-3 win over Australia.

Team USA women’s soccer has had plenty of drama during its run in the Olympics thus far. During the quarterfinals, it was Trinity Rodman who scored in extra time to left the United States to a win over Japan.
