Xavier Newman injury update: NBC broadcast gives positive news on scary situation

New York Jets offensive lineman Xavier Newman was injured during a Sunday Night Football game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, put onto a spine board and carted off the field.
The NBC broadcast crew provided a brief update after Newman was carted off.
“We have a quick update on Jets offensive lineman Xavier Newman,” NBC sideline reporter Melissa Stark said. “He has left for the hospital. The ambulance is on its way. But we can tell you we have movement in his limbs. He squeezed the athletic training staff’s hands, so a great sign there.”
The television cameras showed a video of Xavier Newman exiting the field through one of the end zone tunnels after being wheeled down the sideline. Players from both teams had gathered around Newman before he was carted off.
Newman was injured on an interception.
After quarterback Aaron Rodgers was picked off, Newman was flowing toward the play. He was blasted by Pittsburgh linebacker Patrick Queen, with the two hitting helmets near the sidelines.
Newman immediately hit the turf and did not move for several moments, as trainers quickly ran out to tend to him.

Within a matter of minutes, trainers had removed his facemask so they could better tend to him. Still, there was no movement initially, creating a very scary scene for players and coaches alike.
Eventually, Xavier Newman was loaded onto a spine board, placed onto a gurney and then loaded into a cart, where he was taken from the field.
Newman is in his fourth year in the NFL, arriving by way of Baylor. He spent his first two seasons with the Tennessee Titans and has played the last two seasons with the New York Jets.
