Xavier Worthy attorneys release statement on his behalf after arrest

Xavier Worthy‘s attorneys Chip Lewis and Sam Bassett have released a statement on behalf of the Kansas City Chiefs WR. The joint statement comes following Worthy’s arrest in Texas on Friday night on alleged assault charges.
Lewis and Bassett provide some additional context on the situation. You can read the statement, provided by Austin American-Statesman columnist Cedric Golden, below:
“We are aware of the allegation that led to Mr. Worthy’s arrest,” the statement begins. “We are working with law enforcement in Williamson County to ensure they have the benefit of the totality of circumstances that led to this allegation. The complainant was recently asked to vacate Mr. Worthy’s residence upon discovery of her infidelity. She has refused to do so and made a number of extortive efforts prior to resorting to this baseless allegation against Mr. Worthy.
“We will continue to cooperate with the Williamson County authorities as we have full faith that their investigation will support Mr. Worthy’s innocence.”
Worthy’s attorney’s statement follows the NFL, who released a brief statement of their own on Saturday morning. “We are aware of the matter and have been in contact with the club,” the statement read, via NFL insider Tom Pelissero. The NFL did not comment further on the situation, and the Chiefs have not broken their silence as of this report.
The arrest occurred on Friday night in Georgetown, Texas. The charges include alleged assault against a family or household member by impeding their breathing and circulation, according to Williamson County jail records.

As of Saturday morning, there is no record of Worthy posting a bond. Georgetown, Tex., is located roughly half an hour north of Austin, which is the home of the Texas Longhorns where he played three years of college football.
On the field, Worthy just finished his rookie season in the NFL with the Chiefs after losing to the Philadelphia Eagles last month in the Super Bowl. In the end, Philadelphia came away with a 40-22 blowout win over the Chiefs. Still, he made history in defeat.
He became the first former Longhorn to score a touchdown during a Super Bowl after finishing the game with 157 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns, including a 50-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
With his performance, Worthy broke the record for the most receiving yards by a rookie wideout in the Super Bowl. The previous record was owned by Torry Holt and Chris Matthews, who were tied at 109 yards. Overall, he recorded 59 receptions for 638 yards and six touchdowns during his rookie season.
