Xavier Worthy gives mom, Nicky, touchdown ball on her birthday, ESPN spotlights touching story
Xavier Worthy gifted his mother a birthday present in front of millions of NFL fans on Monday.
During the fourth quarter of Week 5’s Monday Night Football matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and New Orleans Saints, the speedy rookie scored on a three-yard handoff from tight end Travis Kelce. Without hesitation ran over to greet his mother, Nicky Jones, in the front row to give her the game ball on her birthday.
ESPN’s Lisa Salters had a spotlight story ready for this exact moment.
“Xavier Worthy says his mom Nicky is his best friend. He says that she had him when she was 18; so she’s like really his sister,” Salters said during the MNF broadcast. “He said, ‘Our relationship is really close. She’s meant the world to me. She’s just been there for me every step of the way. We have that special bond. Talk all the time.’
“He was so happy that she was going to be at the game tonight because it’s her birthday. The one thing he did say to me, Joe [Buck], is just how great it is now to take care of Mom all because of football.”

Worthy has made the most out of his NFL opportunities during his rookie campaign. Through five games, the Texas product has four touchdowns to his credit — two on the ground and two through the air. He’s totaled six rushes for 42 yards while being utilized through the air with 15 receptions for 154 yards as a regular member of the Chiefs lineup.
It is a continuation of what the do-it-all speedster was able to accomplish at the college level. He was responsible for over 2,700 receiving yards during his three seasons with the Longhorns and caught 26 touchdown passes. He’ll look to continue that effort while taking care of his mother as he moves forward in his NFL career.
