Yankees reliever Jimmy Cordero will miss the rest of the MLB season, including any playoff games, following his suspension for violation of the league’s domestic abuse policy.

MLB commissioner Rob Manfred announced Cordero’s suspension on Wednesday. Cordero’s behavior fell under MLB’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy. However, Manfred didn’t offer any details about what led to the Jimmy Cordero suspension.

The Yankees also didn’t say what triggered Cordero’s suspension. In a statement to the media, the Yankees said: “There is no justification for domestic violence, and we stand with the objectives, standards and enforcement of MLB’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy.”

Jimmy Cordero has played for six MLB teams

To come off suspension, league officials said Cordero must “participate in a confidential and comprehensive evaluation and treatment program.”

Cordero’s suspension is immediate. He will not be paid for the time he will miss.

The 31-year-old was born in San Cristobal, Dominican Republic. He turned pro 11 years ago when he signed an international free agency deal with the Toronto Blue Jays. By 2015, the Blue Jays traded him to Philadelphia, with Cordero earning a spot on the Phillies’ 40-man roster after the season ended.

Jimmy Cordero allowed a homerun Sunday against the Cardinals in what will be his final appearance of 2023. MLB suspended him for the rest of the season, Wednesday, for violating the MLB domestic abuse policy. (Dilip Vishwanat/Getty Images)

He didn’t make his MLB debut until August, 2018. By this time, he played for the Nationals. He spent more time in the minors playing for affiliates for both the Phillies and Mariners. He made the majors, again, as a member of the White Sox. But by 2021, he needed Tommy John surgery, which cost him the season. The Yankees picked him up in 2022 and assigned him to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre., their AAA affiliate. He made their opening day roster for this spring.

In 30 relief appearances, plus one start this season, Jimmy Cordero was 3-2 with a 3.86 ERA. His contract called for him to earn $720,000, the MLB minimum. His last appearance was Sunday against the Cardinals.

The Yankees are 48-38 and in third place in the AL East as they head into tonight’s game against the Orioles.
