Rivals Riser: Illinois WR commit Bennett Konkey earns his fourth star
The Rivals Scouting and Rankings Team is in the midst of tracking the senior seasons for 2027 prospects in advance of the next full Rivals300 update in November. As we move toward the November update, Rivals will make select rankings moves in order to reflect senior risers. These moves are not the exhaustive overhaul we will see in November, but rather recognize individuals who have done enough to merit a bump right now. These moves will be rolled out individually.
The third Rivals Riser is Illinois wide receiver commit Bennett Konkey. The Geneva (Ill.) Community pass catcher has earned a four-star rating and is now ranked the No. 33 wide receiver prospect in the country by Rivals.
Bennett Konkey is producing at an elite level
Illinois wide receiver commit Bennett Konkey is a prospect who popped on our radar after we saw him compete on the 7-on-7 circuit at the OT7 Finals tournament this past summer. That’s where he received his initial three-star rating. And early on in his senior season, he’s been nothing but dominant, which has earned him a rankings boost all the way from a three-star, 89 rating to a four-star, 91 rating. Konkey has caught 46 passes for 961 yards with 13 touchdowns so far as a senior, averaging over 20 yards per catch. And through six games, he is sitting in the top five nationally and first in the state of Illinois for receiving yards.
Athletic traits and ball skills lead to production
Konkey’s top-end speed has helped him turn in multiple explosive plays early in his senior season. He is a monster in the 100 meters and 200 meters, posting multiple sub-10.50 times in the 100 meters this past track and field season, including a personal best of 10.25, and has run a blistering 21-flat in the 200 meters. That long speed shows up on tape as he glides past defenders on vertical routes, as well as with the ball in his hands, turning underneath catches into house calls. And at 6-foot-plus, 185 pounds, he’s not a one-trick pony who relies only on his speed. He has the ability to win in the short area, showing impressive contested-catch ability and climbing the ladder to win 50-50 balls. His natural hands and body control show that he’s someone who can win at every level of the field and pluck the ball away from his frame while putting himself in the best position to attack the football.
Player comparison for Bennett Konkey
He reminds us a lot of former LSU and Nebraska wide receiver Trey Palmer. The former Tampa Bay Buccaneer and current New Orleans Saint was drafted in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft due to his rare top-end speed and explosiveness, combined with playmaking ability at his size. At the NFL Combine, Palmer measured in at 6-foot-and-a-quarter, 192 pounds, and ran a 4.33 in the 40-yard dash. Palmer also possessed a strong track and field profile, winning multiple Louisiana state titles, including four championships in the LHSAA Class 1A 200 meters. He had personal bests of 10.39 in the 100 meters and 20.91 in the 200 meters, which are extremely comparable to what Bennett Konkey has been able to display on the track. They are both physical, natural athletes with the ability to turn every catch into a score.
What does he bring to Illinois?
Konkey is a player who can make an immediate impact in the vertical passing game as a complementary piece early on in his career and eventually develop into a true No. 1 option. The 2027 receiver group has a variety of wide receiver types, with all sorts of skill sets, body types and athletes. We believe he is someone who still has room for growth, even after this update, because of his rare combination of athleticism and ball skills. If he can continue to produce at this elite level, there’s a chance he has yet to reach his ceiling as a player and in the rankings.
