Bubba Nickles overtook Jocelyn Alo atop the AUX leaderboard after the opening day of Series Three. Team Alo fell to Team Mazon, while Team Nickles found plenty of offense against Team Mazon to cap the day.

Team Mazon vs. Team Alo

After building an early lead, Team Mazon did enough to fend off Team Alo in a 6-5 win to open Series Three of AUX.

The wind was blowing out at Wilkins Stadium and the hitters took advantage of it. Sam Fischer put Team Alo on top in the first after a long at-bat resulted in a two-run homer.

The lead didn’t stay for long. Aleshia Ocasio walked a pair of batters after a leadoff Aubrey Leach single to load the bases. Jordan Roberts then sent out a grand slam and Team Mazon never relinquished the lead.

Team Mazon tacked on a pair of runs in the second as Jessi Warren and Tori Vidales drove in runs and they needed those runs in the end as Team Alo’s bullpen tossed five scoreless inning to open the door for a comeback.

Hannah Flippen cut the four-run deficit in half by hitting the game’s third home run in the third inning. Flippen scored on an Erin Coffel single later in the sixth as Team Alo pulled within a run.

Jocelyn Alo gave her team a chance in the seventh with a one-out single and moved to second on an error. Maddie Penta shut the down on the comeback, retiring the next two batters she faced.

Nickles lifted her solo shot in the fourth. It was all in part of a huge offensive performance for Team Nickles, which finished with 17 hits in the win. Nickles herself had two hits in the win.

Everyone but Rylie West, who flew out in her lone at-bat, collected a hit. Jordyn Rudd-Lee went 4-for-4 at the bottom of the lineup. Delanie Wisz, Sydney McKinney and Morgan Zerkle all had multi-hit days.

The offense didn’t have to do much with the way Taylor McQuillin was throwing. After Team Mazon had two hits and scored an early run against the Arizona alum, she was lights out the rest of the way. The lefty had incredible spin on her rise and curveball throughout the day, helping her strike out eight batters in four innings.
