California Director of Athletes Jim Knowlton announced that head softball coach Chelsea Spencer has signed a three-year contract extension, extending her through the 2028 season.
“I am grateful and honored for the opportunity to stay at the helm of this program and to lead it to the heights that it once was,” Spencer said in a statement from the school. “The investment that Jim Knowlton and our senior leadership have put into this softball program is tremendous. This commitment to passionate leadership and relentless dedication to the game underscores the alignment in our shared vision, goals and values. A top educational institution coupled with continued investment into our program will propel us to be the premier West Coast destination for all softball players and will give us the chance to win a national championship again.”
Cal is coming off of its second straight NCAA Tournament appearance. Last year, Spencer had her most successful season since taking over her alma mater, leading Cal to 37 overall wins in 2024, its most since the 2015 season. She has also developed top-tier talents such as Makena Smith and Elon Butler.
This is also another clear investment from the university into the softball program. The university has started its Cal Softball Field Renovation project will renovate and improve the existing Cal Softball Field.

The project will construct an approximately 30,500-square-foot two-story, pre-cast concrete structure housing the bullpen, the concourse, and the press box on the site’s southwest corner. The top of the press box, which represents the tallest portion of the building, will be 35 feet high, and the concourse will be 20 feet high. The press box will be clad in a metal panel system with an aluminum curtain wall. The pre-cast concrete structure will include a new fan concourse and up to 1,511 permanent seats extending out and surrounding the new field. Approximately 22,000 square feet will be exterior ballpark spaces, including spectator seating, bullpens, and dugouts, and approximately 8,500 square feet will be enclosed spaces, including locker rooms, a press box, lounges, and a training room.
The project was approved by the UC Board of Regents in November 2024. Construction is anticipated to start in the first half of 2025 and be complete in 2026.
Cal, a projected postseason team, continues its first season in the ACC this weekend at the Wilson Invitational in Long Beach.
