Chelsea Spencer has stepped down as California’s head softball coach, Cal Director of Athletics Jim Knowlton announced Monday.

Spencer led Cal for five seasons after taking over from the legendary Diane Ninemire. The Bears reached three straight NCAA Tournaments. In two of the three NCAA Tournament appearances during her watch, the Bears reached the regional final. Spencer compiled a record of 153-108-2 as Cal’s head coach.

Assistant coach Jen Deering has been named interim head coach. A national search for a permanent replacement will begin immediately.
