No. 10 LSU took down No. 18 Virginia Tech for a second straight day with a 7-4 win. The victory caps off an impressive weekend as the Tigers outscored the Hokies and Northwestern combined 22-6 across three games.

LSU and Virginia Tech graced us with a Sydney Berzon and Emma Lemley matchup that we desired. The two aces didn’t disappoint despite Lemley receiving the loss. She was effective, especially against LSU’s right-handed hitters; Jalia Lassiter, Maci Bergeron and Tori Edwards. Lemley painted the outside corner multiple times with her velocity and five of her seven strikeouts came against those three.

Ultimately, Virginia Tech’s defense was the difference. Lemley had an arrant throw back to the plate on a bouncer from Avery Hodge that allowed the first run. Danieca Coffey drove in another, continuing her hot start to the season.

The Hokies had trouble in the outfield during LSU’s four-run third inning. Michelle Chatfield couldn’t track down a ball that the wind carried away from her leading to Bergeron getting a double and later scoring on a hard hit back from Edwards the next at-bat. What should’ve been a sacrifice fly turned into three more runs after Bre Peck dropped the ball.

LSU’s lineup still looked very sharp against one of the best arms in 2025. Seven of the nine Tiger starters came away with a hit including Jadyn Laneaux, who is emerging as LSU’s primary left fielder. Bergeron is starting to show the power we expected when she arrived as a highly touted recruit. She smashed a ball off of Lemley to center.

Berzon was the All-American that we know. Her hard dropball and devasting changeup kept the Hokies guessing the whole game. Berzon finished with a season-high nine strikeouts.

In the biggest moment of the game, she was at her best. The talented Virginia Tech freshman duo of Jayden Jones and Jordan Lynch both reached to open the fifth inning. After a fielder’s choice moved the runners into scoring position, Berzon disposed of Peck and Cori McMillan to escape the jam. Peck couldn’t hold back on a changeup in the dirt for her third strikeout and McMillan rolled over to second base.

Jones brought the game within striking distance with a two-run blast in the seventh. Two more Virginia Tech batters reached but Berzon came back to strand them with back-to-back groundouts.

While many might bring up LSU’s great start to 2024 before struggling at times during SEC play, these Tigers look and feel different than that team. The young bats are progressing with hitting coach Bryce Neal. Jayden Heavener and Tatum Clopton have been masterful as complementary pieces to Berzon. LSU has looked very good but their next big test won’t come till UCLA at the Judi Garman in a couple of weeks.
