No. 10 South Carolina delivers late, takes series No. 17 Georgia

No. 10 South Carolina found a way late, to beat No. 17 Georgia 3-2 to take its first SEC series.
Sam Gress delivered when her team needed her the most. Gress threw 4.2 innings and only gave up one hit and one run to get the second win in as many days for her and the Gamecocks. The win secured the first series win against Georgia since 2017.
South Carolina threatened to take an early lead in the first inning but could not capitalize. The combination of a single and a walk was fruitful for the Gamecocks in game two of this series. With a Quincee Lilio single and a Karley Shelton walk, South Carolina was in business. However, after Arianna Rodi fouled out, Ella Chancey lined into a double play to end the threat.
True freshman Mua Williams broke the scoreless tie with one swing of the bat. Like she did on Friday night, she hit a solo home run to give Georgia a 1-0 lead in the 3rd inning. That home run knocked starter Jori Heard from the contest. Georgia catcher Marissa Miller connected on her second home run of the year to double the lead at 2-0.

Randi Roelling took a one-hitter into the 5th inning until the Gamecocks’ offense woke up. Natalie Heath grounded out to begin the inning. However, the next three Gamecocks reached base, causing a pitching change. Shelton beat out an infield hit to second base to score the first run to make the score 2-1. Then, Rodi walked to force in a run with her fifth walk in two games. Immediately following, Ella Chancey hit a sacrifice fly to give South Carolina their first lead of the game, 3-2.
Over the final two games, Gress threw 11.2 and only gave up 6 hits and 3 earned runs. The 1.88 ERA over that time was pivotal in getting South Carolina back to their winning ways. Equally important as the Gamecocks step out of conference play next weekend to face Texas Tech. Georgia will return home to face Georgia State before hosting the red hot LSU Tigers.
