No. 11 South Carolina takes series opener against No. 12 Texas Tech

Sam Gress got her sixth win of the season, this time in relief. No. 11 South Carolina won 5-2 in the first game of the non-conference series against No. 12 Texas Tech.
Ella Chancey drove in two runs and scored twice for the Gamecocks. She went 1-for-2 with a two-RBI double. The Gamecock pitchers only allowed six hits in the game, hopefully setting the tone for the series.
Karley Shelton got South Carolina started strong with a single in the bottom of the first off of surprise starter Chloe Riassetto. Lexi Winters hit a ball in the gap with two outs that was able to score Shelton. However, Riassetto stopped the bleeding and only allowed the Gamecocks to score just the lone run.
The Gamecocks added on in the second inning. Abigail Knight doubled to the left-center gap to begin the inning. South Carolina loaded the bases with two more hits from Natalie Heath and Emma Sellers. Emily Vinson grounded out for a fielder’s choice to score a run to make the lead 2-0. However, the damage was limited by Texas Tech again.

A seemingly routine inning-ending play for South Carolina turned into the break that the Red Raiders needed. A call was overturned ruling the safe at first base. Lauren Allred took full advantage, lacing a game-tying two-run double down the left-field line.
South Carolina answered back with a crooked number on the scoreboard. The Gamecocks were set with two on and no outs after a Quincee Lilio walk and Shelton single. Chancey delivered the go-ahead double for the 4-2 advantage. Brooke Blankenship hit a sacrifice fly to add the insurance run.
Texas Tech threatened in the seventh with a runner on but couldn’t get the runner past first base. The combination of Jori Heard and Gress held the Red Raiders to two runs in the victory. The two teams will face up again in game two of the series at 3:00 PM ET on Saturday.
