No. 17 Georgia hands No. 10 SC 5th-straight loss in 7-3 win

No. 17 Georgia notched a 7-3 win as Randi Roelling went the distance for her sixth win of the season. She held the Gamecocks to just three runs. Roelling scattered seven hits over her seven innings of work to move Georgia to 21-4 on the season and even at 2-2 in SEC play.
For South Carolina, their pitching staff again struggled with control. After walking 17 Sooners last weekend, the Gamecocks allowed 8 walks to the Bulldogs tonight. Now, sitting at 0-4 in conference play, South Carolina needs a bounce-back performance Saturday.
South Carolina starting pitcher Nealy Lamb walked three in the first inning. After only retiring a batter, she was replaced. A Lyndi Rae Davis RBI groundout was all the Bulldogs would get. However, that would be enough for the Bulldogs’ 1-0 lead.
After an Esther White hit by pitch and a Mua Williams single up the middle, the Bulldogs had things going again in the second inning. Then, Dallis Goodnight reached on a fielder’s choice. After that, Sarah Gordon hit a triple down the right field line that scored two to extend the lead to 3-1. Immediately following, Jaydyn Goodwin singled just out of the reach of South Carolina shortstop Brooke Blankenship for an early 4-0 advantage.
The aforementioned Blankenship got things going for the Gamecocks in the second inning. She tripled down the right field line when the dive from Gordon came up empty. Blankenship scored off of a Lexi Winters sacrifice fly to make the score 4-1. Shortly after, Natalie Heath launched a Roelling pitch over the left field wall to cut the lead to 4-2. However, the damage was limited as Roelling got Arianna Rodi to pop up with the bases loaded.

The Bulldogs got back into the scoring column in the fourth inning. Williams led off the inning with a home run. Goodnight hit a looper to shallow center field, where she legged out a double. Georgia got an infield single to drop as the looper fell in between first and second for a 6-2 Bulldog lead. Rodi was knocked out of the game on the play, an unfortunate symptom of the play when she collided with Karley Shelton.
Later, in the sixth, Georgia got a little much-needed insurance. Gordon got her second hit with a solo home run. This was the third RBI in the game for Gordon. The round-tripper pushed the advantage to 7-2.
Emma Sellers, who filled in for Rodi, gave the Gamecocks some life in the 7th inning. She tripled with two outs to drive in Shelton to make the score 7-3. But that’s all the Gamecocks would get as Georgia took the opening game of the series. The two teams will meet tomorrow at 3:00 PM local time for game two of the series.
