Texas clinched a pivotal series win over LSU with a 6-5 victory on Saturday afternoon at McCombs Field.

Tegan Kavan (19-3) started for the second time in the series, capturing the complete game victory, allowing five runs on six hits while striking out two.

Jayden Heavener started in the circle for the Tigers, looking to rebound after a tough outing at Texas A&M. The rookie left-hander retired the side in order with a pair of strikeouts in the bottom of the first but ran into trouble in the sixth. She went 5.2 innings, allowing four runs on four hits while striking out two.

How it happened:

Reese Atwood opened the scoring with a first-pitch home run to deep center in the bottom of the second, giving Texas a 1-0 lead.

LSU threatened in the fifth inning. Maddox McKee led off with a hit-by-pitch and advanced to second on a wild pitch with no outs. Jadyn Laneaux grounded hard to second and reached on an error, putting runners on the corners. Sierra Daniel then lined out to third for the first out, bringing up the top of the order. Danieca Coffey reached on an RBI fielder’s choice as Texas attempted a double play but couldn’t convert, allowing McKee to score and tie the game.

In the top of the sixth, Maci Bergeron reached on a one-out grounder through the shift, as Goode and Bennett miscommunicated. Redoutey then launched a two-run home run to right-center, putting LSU ahead 3-1.

In the bottom of the sixth, Mia Scott drew a two-out walk to breathe life into the Texas dugout. Atwood followed with a single down the third-base line, putting a runner in scoring position for Joley Mitchell. Mitchell came through again, blasting a three-run home run to give Texas a 4-3 lead. Ashley Vallejo entered in relief of Heavener and ended the inning on a groundout after allowing a hit to Katie Stewart through the left side.

With three outs to go, Laneaux led off the seventh with a walk. Sierra Daniel placed a bunt near the left batter’s box that appeared foul but stayed fair. Danieca Coffey followed with an RBI single up the middle to tie the game. Jalia Lassiter delivered a ground-ball fielder’s choice to score the go-ahead run, 5-4. Edwards then walked to bring up Bergeron, who lined out to left. Kavan finally escaped the inning on a comebacker from Redoutey.

In the bottom of the seventh, Sydney Berzon entered in relief of Vallejo. Leighann Goode led off with a double to right-center, just beyond an outstretched Lassiter in center. Bennett lined out to right for the first out, and Maloney grounded out to first for the second. With two outs, Kayden Henry came up clutch with a game-tying single through the right side. With Mia Scott at the plate, Henry stole second and scored the walk-off run on a grounder back to the pitcher, as the umpire called obstruction and the ball was bobbled at the plate.

Texas makes a trip up to Stillwater for a midweek game against the Cowgirls before facing Oklahoma in Norman next weekend. LSU returns home after two weeks in Texas to host McNeese and Florida.
