No. 5 Florida State beats No. 18 Virginia Tech, takes ACC regular season title

No. 5 Florida State controlled the ACC all season long and added an exclamation point to its regular-season crown. The Noles beat No. 18 Virginia Tech 13-4 on Friday to secure the ACC regular season title.
Florida State struck early. Virginia Tech starter Sophie Kleiman struggled with her command after quickly retiring the first two batters she faced. A single and two free passes loaded the bases for Amaya Ross, who was back in the starting lineup with Kennedy Harp out due to injury. Ross delivered with a two-out two-run single back up the middle. Ross had four RBIs in the win.
The Seminoles knocked Kleiman from the game in the third inning after both Jahni Kerr and Ashtyn Danley drove in runs. Florida State extended its lead in the fourth after Michaela Edenfield blasted a two-run homer off of Cassie Grizzard.
Florida State’s offense continued to roll. The Noles scored in every inning after Kerr belted a solo shot in the seventh, they tacked on two more. Every starter but one earned a hit. Hallie Wacaser drove in a run without picking up a base knock.

Danley got the start in the circle and did well to keep the Hokie lineup off-balanced with her drop and change combination. She didn’t allow a run until the third inning after Cori McMillan singled in a run. However, Danley responded by stranding runners at the corners after getting the next two batters out.
The secret to Danley’s success was avoiding the big inning. Bre Peck drove in Kylie Aldridge after she tripled. But once again, Danley stranded two runners. Although McMillan was a thorn in Danley’s side. The All-American hit two solo home runs – she leads the country with 27 home runs now – ending the night 4-for-4.
Danley did go the distance, allowing four runs on eight hits and striking out five.
The Seminoles will try to clinch the series on Saturday at 4 p.m. on ACC Network.
