No. 5 Texas A&M overcomes errors, splits with No. 14 Texas Tech

The story of the two-game series between Texas A&M and Texas Tech could have been the miscues. But it was perhaps the game-saving play by freshman Frankie Frazel that saved the day. Frazel made a diving catch in the gap that helped preserve a 7-6 win for Texas A&M. After getting out to a big lead, the Aggies held on for a split against the Red Raiders in the finale of the Texas A&M Invitational.
Texas A&M got started in the second inning with a solo home run off the bat of Allie Enright. Now comes the unconventional part. With two runners on, Koko Wooley hit a little league home run. Wooley tripled to right, center field gap and then scored on an errant throw to give the Aggies a quick 4-0 lead in the second.
The Red Raiders answered right back in the third. A leadoff single by Logan Halleman brought home a run after a Hailey Toney double to get Texas Tech on the board. An error allowed Toney to advance to third. An Alexa Langliers ground out to shortstop, which resulted in a fielder’s choice and credited another run on the scoreboard. This allowed Texas Tech to cut the deficit in half to 4-2.
The Aggies punched back. KK Dement drove in a run with a double down the left field line after Enright got to second base. Dement advanced to third on another errant throw. She promptly scored on a fielder’s choice to the pitcher to regain a four-run lead for the Aggies, 6-2. Olivia Johnson hit a no-doubter to left center field to add another for a 7-2 lead.

Comparatively, the Red Raiders provided answers over the next two innings. A Bailey Lindemuth home run chipped away at the score, moving it to 7-3. The fifth would prove fruitful for Texas Tech and get them back in the game. Back-to-back errors by Dement at second base put runners on first and second. Raegan Jennings beat out an infield hit, which scored a run to get the game back to a two-run affair. A Lindemuth sacrifice fly followed by a Valdez single brought the game to a one-run score, 7-6.
With the game on the line, Kate Munnerlyn helped to shut down the Red Raiders over the last couple of innings. Munnerlyn allowed just one hit over her two innings of work and retired six of the seven batters she faced. Although, a big thanks was shouted in Frazel’s direction after that great diving catch in right field. Both teams will get into league play with significant challenges. Texas A&M will entertain Florida next weekend, and Texas Tech will travel to Stillwater to face the Cowgirls.
