Ole Miss secures series over No. 10 Arkansas

Ole Miss might be the hottest team in the country right now. The Rebels extended their winning streak to 15 games after knocking off No. 10 Arkansas 9-3 in Oxford. The Saturday win secured the SEC opening series for the Rebels after run-ruling the Razorbacks on Friday.
Despite Arkansas scoring first, Ole Miss responded with a five-run second inning against the Razorbacks’ Payton Burnham. Jaden Pone delivered a two-run double after Ole Miss collected three straight singles off the Arkansas freshman in the circle. Aliyah Binford drove in two more on a single after another run had scored on a fielder’s choice.
Lexie Brady homered for a second straight night. Ole Miss struck for three more in the fourth. Binford, who also started in the circle for the Rebels, collected her third RBI of the night. Freshmen Persy Llamas and Mackenzie Pickens also drove in runs.
Binford threw a complete game but it wasn’t the cleanest effort. She allowed nine hits and walked five batters. However, she only yielded the three runs, one being a Bri Ellis solo home run. Arkansas once again left 10 runners on base and went 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position. It is hard to win softball games when you can’t cash in on those chances.

Arkansas doesn’t need to sound the alarm bells in March. Although the Razorbacks have now been outscored 27-5 in three games against the two best teams (Ole Miss and UCLA) they’ve played this season. Robyn Herron in the circle for the series finale should help stabilize Arkansas’ chances but the freshmen pitchers will need to show more going forward.
Ole Miss will attempt to earn the sweep on Sunday at 2 p.m. ET. The Rebels won’t play another SEC series until March 21 against Kentucky. They play Western Kentucky, North Dakota State, Samford and Iowa State in non-conference games next week. Arkansas will attempt to carry momentum from Sunday’s result into next weekend’s series at Bogle Park against Oklahoma.
