The below rankings are not indicative of the Softball America Top 25. The Softball America composite rankings average all major College Softball polls as well as the RPI and KPI rankings. All stats include games played from Monday to Monday each week and do not include Tuesday’s games.

Movers and Shakers of the Week

As we get into conference play the movement each week is more volatile than ever. With that, each week we will highlight a few teams that took significant steps ahead as well as teams that took a stumble. Ohio State, Liberty, Virginia Tech, and Stanford took big steps forward. Ohio State went from unranked to No. 23. Similarly, Liberty was not ranked a week ago and now comes in at No. 25. Stanford received a big bump in the computer rankings and advanced from No. 19 to No. 13. Lastly, from their sweep over Louisville, Virginia Tech is up to No. 14 from No. 21 last week.

Conversely, Georgia, Arkansas, Duke, and Auburn took a tumble in this week’s rankings. Georgia dropped to No. 19 this week from No. 15 last week by way of their series loss to South Carolina. Duke and Arkansas also dropped three spots this week. Finally, Auburn dropped three spots as well and they have lost seven straight games.

This Year We Are So Much More Extra

One of the key metrics that we track this year to help quantify power numbers is the total number of extra-base hits each team hits per game. As part of that, we looked at the early part of the conference season in 2025. The number of extra-base hits has increased by an average of 0.50 from 2.67 to 3.17 per game. Now, we go deeper into the numbers.

On the positive side, we’ve seen three teams that have dramatically improved their power numbers from last year. Ohio State has 4.29 extra-base hits compared to 2.61 last season. Jasmyn Burns leads the charge with 12 doubles, 1 triple, and 10 home runs. Stanford has seen a significant bump from 2.34 last year to 4.22 this year. Taryn Kern has had a big one-year improvement with 5 doubles, 2 triples, and 7 home runs. Finally, Arkansas has gone from 2.18 extra-base hits to 3.69 this year. The combination of Bri Ellis leading the nation in home runs and Courtney Day has the Razorbacks’ power numbers soaring.

There were six of our top 25 teams that have seen a decrease in power production. Oklahoma State has seen a 0.86 decrease in power numbers per game. With only 24 home runs and 22 doubles the Cowgirls aren’t lighting up the scoreboard as much in 2025. Georgia also has a decrease of 0.45 per game. With the amount of roster turnover in Athens, the power number decrease is not surprising. Lastly, Texas Tech comes in with a decrease of 0.46 per game. With NiJaree Canady in place, the importance of increased run production could be an easy indicator of a potential national seed in May.

Getting Defensive

It stands to reason that with power numbers up and the ball being put in play more pitching and defense could potentially suffer. With that, we looked into three teams that have an ERA below 2.00 and a fielding percentage of .979 above as teams that have been the best at saving runs for their teams. Conversely, a few teams that could potentially lose a few games they shouldn’t if there isn’t improvement in those areas with an ERA above 2.00 and a fielding percentage equal to or less than .969.

Starting with Oklahoma, the Sooners have preached defense over their championship run. This metric maintains its consistency with a 1.99 team ERA and a fielding percentage of .981. The depth in the circle behind Sam Landry could be key in keeping this consistent. Next, LSU has been an excellent defensive team with a .979 fielding percentage and a 1.56 ERA. The concern with the Tigers has been whether or not they can maintain their hot start. Oregon has performed very well with a 1.80 ERA and a .981 fielding percentage. The combination of Lyndsey Grein and Elise Sokolsky has been dynamic in the circle for the Ducks.

Texas A&M has performed well despite a higher team ERA than was perhaps anticipated coming into the season with a 2.23. Emiley Kennedy finished 2024 with a 1.93 ERA and that has gone up to 2.51 in 2025. However, she threw a one-hit, complete-game shutout against Auburn this weekend so that could be a sign of improvement. Alabama has seen a big improvement at the plate, but that has suffered in the field with a .952 fielding percentage. Continued improvement from Salen Hawkins and Brooke Ellestad will be paramount as the two have 20 of the Tide’s 41 errors on the season. Similarly, the Liberty Flames come into the week with a .954 fielding percentage. Savanah Whatley and Savannah Woodard have 15 of those 33 errors.
