Softball America Stars of the Week: Landry, Scott, Sacco, Cruse

The Softball America staff will pick four student-athletes as our college softball players of the week following the latest slate of games. Our award system isn’t necessarily stat-based but rather players who left a lasting impact as we watched games from the previous week. Who changed the tune of their teams? Who made the headlines? Who might be the breakout star during the season?
Sam Landry, RHP, Oklahoma
As much as Patty Gasso talked about trying to be more pitch by committee this year, Sam Landry’s performances have changed that outlook. Will she be the Oklahoma’s Jordy Bahl and Kelly Maxwell in the postseason? Time will tell. However, in her first SEC series, she threw 11-plus scoreless innings and allowed five hits, earning a win and two saves against Arkansas.
Mia Scott, INF, Texas
Scott hit her first homer of the season against newly ranked Ohio State, driving in three of the team’s four runs in the win. She also played a crucial part in Texas’ series win at Florida. She had a go-ahead two-RBI single before Reese Atwood’s homer broke it open. Scott hit a three-run homer in the second game of the doubleheader. She ended the series with six RBIs.

Sierra Sacco, OF, Mississippi State
The Mississippi State outfielder did it all to help the Bulldogs win their first series in Tuscaloosa. Sacco went 6-for-8 against Alabama with two doubles, two RBIs, four walks, five runs and two stolen bases. She is currently riding a 27-game on-base streak which is ninth in school history and a career-long 14-game hitting streak.
Taylor Cruse, OF, Ohio State
Last season, Cruse had two hits her entire freshman year. Now she’s hitting bases-clearing doubles to tie games against Jordy Bahl. The sophomore outfielder helped kickstart Ohio State’s comeback on Saturday against Nebraska, where she also hit a two-run homer. She had another two-run homer in the series clincher to finish the weekend with eight RBIs.
