Texas shortstop Viviana Martinez expected to miss 2025 season

EDITOR’S NOTE: Texas confirmed in early February that Martinez will miss the whole season.
Texas shortstop Viviana Martinez is expected to miss the 2025 season due to an injury sustained in the fall sources told Softball America.
“While we will, undoubtedly, miss Vivi’s physical skills on the field of play, her presence in the dugout, at practice and within the team will still play an important role in the success of this team,” Texas head coach Mike White said. “Her leadership, calm demeanor, and passion for the game manifests her maturity as a person and athlete. With the best medical care and rehabilitation at The University of Texas, there is no doubt Vivi will return in 2026 stronger and eager to continue her quest to lead this program to a national championship.”

Martinez is coming off a stellar year at the plate. She had 1.017 OPS, 18 doubles, three triples and five home runs while driving in 52 runs. Martinez also helped stabilize the Texas defense toward the end of the season.
Texas, which is one of the preseason favorites, has many options to fill the void at shortstop potentially. Leighann Goode might be the ideal option, but Katie Stewart got a start there against Texas A&M this fall. Regardless, it’ll be a hit to the Texas offense.
