Wildcats blank Cowgirls: No. 10 Arizona secures series behind Netz

Devyn Netz got the ball for the Wildcats and tossed five shutout innings, allowing two hits and three walks before giving way to Miranda Stoddard and Aissa Silva – who faced a single batter in a high-leverage moment. Netz shined on both sides of the ball, sealing the 3-0 victory for Arizona softball with a two-run home run in the sixth.
Ruby Meylan suffered her fourth loss of the season, going the distance for the Cowgirls. She allowed three runs on six hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
How it happened:
Arizona’s offense benefitted from timely hits, getting things going in the third.
Taylor Biehl drew a one-out walk and stole second. Biehl advanced to third on a Dakota Kennedy ground ball back to the circle. Reagan Shockey then stepped up and delivered a perfectly executed high slap to third to score Biehl.
The Cowgirls struggled to string together offense as Netz tossed five shutout innings before handing the ball to Stoddard. Stoddard entered in the sixth inning after a leadoff walk to Tallen Edwards and surrendered a single down the right-field line to Rosie Davis. Edwards advanced to third, putting runners on the corners for Amanda Hasler.

Hasler’s groundball to shortstop led Biehl to throw home for the out attempt, but a slow transfer by Sydney Stewart allowed Edwards to get back to the bag, loading the bases for Karli Godwin. Stoddard buckled down to get a strikeout on a pitch out of the zone, and Arizona turned to the lefty to face the red-hot Claire Timm. Aissa Silva induced a ground ball to second to erase the bases-loaded threat.
The Wildcats added insurance in the bottom of the sixth. Shockey singled to second base and scored on a Netz two-run home run to deep center field, extending the lead to 3-0.
Stoddard reentered in the seventh to close out the Wildcats’ series win and her first save of the year. Arizona will hit the road next week to face Kansas, while the Cowgirls will take on Oklahoma at Devon Park on Wednesday before returning home to host Iowa State.
