2023 MLB Draft ends with six Alabama baseball players selected
Alabama’s Jim Jarvis and Garrett McMillan were each selected on the final day of the 2023 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. The pair joins Monday’s four selections to push the Crimson Tide’s total number of drafted players to six in 2023.
Jim Jarvis (320th Overall | Detroit Tigers) was first to go on Tuesday, being selected in the 11th round. He was followed by Garrett McMillan (407th Overall | Pittsburgh Pirates) who was taken in the 14th. The pair joins Andrew Pinckney (4th Round | 102nd Overall | Washington Nationals), Grayson Hitt (4th Round | 112th Overall | Arizona Diamondbacks), Hunter Furtado (6th Round | 167th Overall | Pirates) and Caden Rose (7th Round | 208th Overall | Boston Red Sox) to make up the Tide’s 2023 selections.

In addition to the current players, signee Bryce Eldridge was selected in the first round at pick No. 16 on Sunday night by the San Francisco Giants. The final two days saw fellow signees AJ Ewing (4th Round – Competitive Balance | 134th Overall | New York Mets) and Jeremy Pilon (18th Round | 543rd Overall | Tampa Bay Rays) also get drafted.
Alabama in the MLB Draft
- The Crimson Tide’s six total picks in 2023 are the most in any draft since 2016 when UA also had six players taken
- Excluding the abbreviated 2020 MLB Draft, Alabama has had 15 draft picks on the mound (14 players) in the last five drafts, including three pitchers taken in one year four separate times
- With Tuesday’s two selections, Alabama’s all-time draft pick total moved to 170 (159 players) since the event’s inception in 1966
- The Crimson Tide has had one-or-more players selected in 52 of the 58 MLB Drafts overall
- Alabama has had at least one player drafted for 45 consecutive years dating back to 1979
- A total of 99 players from The University of Alabama have heard their name called in the last 23 drafts dating back to 2000
- UA has seen 64 players drafted in the last 13 years
The 2023 MLB First-Year Player Draft began on Sunday, July 9 and ran through Tuesday, July 11. The three-day event was featured on MLB.com.
All players that have remaining eligibility are able to return to the University to continue their careers at Alabama if they elect to not sign a professional contract.
Jim Jarvis (11th Round | 320th Overall | Detroit Tigers)
Infielder, Senior
- A four-year starter for the Crimson Tide who has played in 196 total games with 193 starts
- One of the top defenders in program history that ranks seventh for double plays turned (109) and eighth for assists (490)
- Honored with an ABCA/Rawlings Gold Glove and SEC All-Defensive Team honors as a senior
- Batted .273 (68-249) with 10 doubles and six home runs to go with a team-high four triples in 2023
- Also led UA in runs scored with 65, a total that was 12th in the league, while stealing nine bases to tie for the team-high mark
- Started all 58 games at shortstop in 2022, batting .267 (59-221) with four doubles, three triples and four homers
- Added 20 RBI and 43 runs scored to go with seven stolen bases, 30 walks and six hit-by-pitch
- Played in 57 games with 56 starts as a sophomore, making 48 starts at short, five at third and three at second base
- Saw time in 17 games with 15 starts during the abbreviated 2020 season
- Earned his undergraduate degree in May 2023 and was selected to the College Sports Communicators’ Academic All-District 4 Team this spring
- Named to the SEC Spring Academic Honor Roll three times (2021-23) while also being tabbed to the league’s First-Year Academic Honor Roll in 2019-20
- Also earned a spot on the SEC Community Service Team for 2023
Garrett McMillan (14th Round | 407th Overall | Pittsburgh Pirates)
Pitcher, Senior
- Alabama’s Friday night ace in 2022 who battled injuries as a senior
- Started 25 games across the last two seasons while making 26 appearances overall
- Sports an 8-6 record with a 4.39 ERA (62 ER/127.0 IP) as a starter
- Struck out 118 compared to 42 walks in the starting role
- Appeared in 10 games with nine starts as a senior, finishing with a 4-2 record while maintaining a 4.89 ERA (23 ER/42.1 IP)
- Owned a 3-2 mark with a 3.90 ERA (14 ER/32.1 IP) across eight appearances (seven starts) in SEC action during the 2023 campaign
- Limited league hitters to a .231 average while striking out 26 in his 32.1 innings of work that ranked second on UA during league play
- The Crimson Tide’s Friday night starter in his first season at the Capstone
- Finished with a 4-5 record and a 4.29 ERA (41 ER/86/0 IP) across 16 starts in 2022
- Struck out 83 compared to 26 walks while limiting opposing hitters to a .241 average
- Paced Alabama and ranked seventh in the SEC for innings pitched while tying for 14th in the league in strikeouts and ranking 15th in opposing batting average
- Worked 5.0-plus innings in all 14 regular-season starts and averaged 6.0 innings per start entering the SEC Tournament in 2022
- Gave up 35 earned runs (2.5/start) and made nine starts with three-or-fewer earned runs allowed during the regular season as a junior
- Began his collegiate career at Shelton State Community College where he helped the Bucs to the 2021 Alabama Community College Conference Championship in 2021
- Was originally drafted in the 19th round of the 2022 MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins
