Roster countdown: 15 Turner; 15 Simpson; 13 Moore
Counting down the Alabama roster three players at a time. Next up for the 2023 series: outside linebacker Dallas Turner; quarterback Ty Simpson; and defensive back Malachi Moore.
15 OLB Dallas Turner
2022: As a sophomore, Turner saw action in all 13 games, making 10 starts. Of his 37 tackles on the season, eight went for loss, including four sacks. Turner also posted nine quarterback hurries and returned a Tennessee fumble for a touchdown. He was as a defensive player of the week honoree by the Alabama coaching staff post-Utah State.
Of note: Even when Will Anderson was the unquestioned every down guy at outside linebacker, Turner was on the field a lot. With Anderson off to the Sunday game, Turner now takes on the designation of successor to the No. 3 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. While he flashed at times a season ago, more consistency is needed from the junior. Not just in terms of negative play production, either. Polish as it relates to eye discipline and technique against the run is where it will start for Turner. Like Anderson, Turner offers a good bit of versatility, although I wouldn’t expect to see him in a four-point stance as much as we saw with Anderson.
15 QB Ty Simpson
2022: Simpson appeared in four games, maintaining redshirt status in the process. He completed 4 of 5 passes for 35 yards.
Of note: Simpson currently finds himself squarely in the middle of a quarterback competition that includes Jalen Milroe and Tyler Buchner. In completing 12 of 26 passes for 155 yards and rushing for 58 yards on six carries in the 2023 A-Day game, Simpson quarterbacked the Crimson team to a victory. When it was over, he was among those honored with the Jerry Duncan “I Like To Practice” Award. Simpson possesses the physical attributes needed to direct an offense that will include the quarterback in the run game. As is the case with his primary competitors, he is in the process of proving trustworthy where running the operation and ball security are concerned. Given what we’ve heard from head coach Nick Saban in regards to the competition likely carrying over into the regular season, the arrival of game week won’t signal an end to Simpson’s quest to replace Bryce Young.

13 DB Malachi Moore
2022: As a special teamer and member of the dime package, Moore amassed 31 tackles on the season. He also recorded 1.5 sacks, five pass breakups and a return of a blocked punt for a touchdown. Moore was honored as a special teams player of the week following wins over Louisiana-Monroe, Vanderbilt and Ole Miss.
Of note: For a secondary looking to replace a lot of production, Moore offers a veteran presence who has logged important snaps at safety, star and money over the last three seasons. In the spring, he moved between safety and star, where he recorded nine tackles, three sacks and a pass breakup for the Crimson (first-team) defense in the A-Day game. With Alabama going to the transfer portal for cornerback Trey Amos and safety Jaylen Key, there are moving pieces to consider in relation to Moore’s role(s) for the upcoming season. Amos is a candidate to see the field in the nickel and dime, which might free up Terrion Arnold to work at the star. In that scenario, Moore would be more of a factor at safety.
