Former LSU starting quarterback Zach Mettenberger is joining the Alabama staff as an off-field analyst. The news was broken early on Thursday afternoon by On3 senior national college football reporter Matt Zenitz, who reported that Mettenberger was already listed in the Crimson Tide’s staff directory.

Mettenberger is already familiar with Nick Saban and the Alabama football program, too. His LSU teams faced off against the Crimson Tide on four separate occasions, including twice during the 2011 season when Alabama and LSU played a second time for a national title.

Coming out of Watkinsville (Ga.) Oconee County, the former five-star prospect chose to enroll at Georgia. Unfortunately for him, his time in Athens only lasted a season before he was kicked off the team for a violation of team rules. From there, he went to Butler Community College in 2010 before joining LSU in 2011. Mettenberger started two seasons in Baton Rouge from 2012-13, throwing for 5,691 yards 34 touchdowns.

After his senior season, Mettenberger went on to be a sixth-round pick (No. 178 overall) by the Tennessee Titans in the 2014 NFL Draft. Over the next two seasons, the former pocket passer played in 14 games with 10 starts, throwing for 2,347 yards and 12 touchdowns with 14 interceptions. By 2019, Mettenberger was the starting quarterback for the Memphis Express in the one and only season the AAF had a league.

Mettenberger then turned in his helmet and shoulder pads for a clipboard. He became the offensive coordinator at Hillsboro (Tenn.) High School in 2020, then moved to a role as an assistant coach at Father Ryan (Tenn.) this past season. Now that he’s looking to make the jump to the college ranks, there’s no better place to make that transition than under Saban in Tuscaloosa.
