Alabama is set to add former SEC defensive coordinator Todd Grantham to its off-field coaching staff. On Sunday, On3 national college football reporter Matt Zenitz broke the news that the Crimson Tide will bring in Grantham as an analyst. Reports last week from FootballScoop.com suggested the possibility, but now the expectation is that Grantham will accept the role after mulling it over.

Grantham has served as Florida’s defensive coordinator for each of the past four seasons.

He was relieved of his duties back in early November as the Gators were hovering around the bottom half of the SEC in total and scoring defense for a second-straight season. Before that, he was Mississippi State’s defensive coordinator alongside Dan Mullen in 2017. That year, the Bulldogs were ranked in the top-10 nationally in total defense, allowing only 306.3 yards per game.

Grantham brings plenty of coordinator experience from the college level, including stops at three different SEC programs over the last decade-plus. He’s also been a defensive coordinator or position coach for multiple NFL teams. Those stops include the Indianapolis Colts (1999-01), Houston Texans (2002-04), Cleveland Browns (DC, 2005-07) and Dallas Cowboys.

This will also be Grantham’s second stint coaching under Nick Saban. He worked for the Alabama head coach at Michigan State from 1996-98, serving as the defensive line coach. He was also the assistant head coach for the 1998 season. Yes, that was almost 25 years ago, but it does suggest that there’s at least some comfort level between the two.

With this hiring, Alabama has now brought in several off-field analysts with notable names.

First, it was former LSU and NFL quarterback Zach Mettenberger. Then, former Tennessee head coach Derek Dooley was hired along with Ole Miss analyst Nick McGriff. Now, it’s Grantham, a former SEC defensive coordinator, who will join the Crimson Tide staff. Last week, FootballScoop.com reported that the veteran coach would work closely with Alabama’s front-seven, which will feature multiple high-regarded NFL talents in 2022.

Stay tuned for more updates on this story once Alabama makes it official by adding Grantham to the online staff directory.
