Alabama Athletics self-reports 11 minor NCAA violations

The University of Alabama’s athletic department self-reported 11 Level 3 NCAA violations from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2024, according to a violations summary posted on the school’s athletics website on Wednesday. Nine different sports reported violations, including one minor infraction committed by the Alabama men’s basketball program from April of 2024.

The Crimson Tide football team, however, did not self-report any violations.

Below is a full list of Alabama’s minor NCAA violations and the corrective actions taken.

1. Sport: Men’s Swimming (4/7/23)

– Summary: Coach had an impermissible electronic communication with a student-athlete who had not initiated a notification of transfer. 

– Corrective actions taken: 1. Alabama will not recruit the SA if he ever does enter the portal, nor will Alabama provide the SA with an opportunity to receive athletic aid or have a roster spot with the men’s swimming program. 2. The institutional staff member(s) were not permitted to make telephone contact with any PSAs for the 14 calendar days immediately following the discovery of the violation. 3. The institution shall not be permitted to contact the involved PSA, even if such contact becomes permissible. 4. Involved institutional staff members received a letter of admonishment. 5. Rules education was be provided. 6. Swimming and diving program evaluated their process for identifying and recruiting PSAs from the transfer portal. 7. All swimming and diving staff members have been informed of their login information for the NCAA SSO, and have access to the transfer portal. 8. The involved coach was prohibited from engaging in any recruiting activities for a period of 14 consecutive days (SEC Imposed). 9. The institution required to preclude the men’s swimming and diving program from calling or sending correspondence (written or electronic) to any PSA for one week (NCAA Imposed).

2. Sport: Men’s Baseball (7/5/23)

– Summary: PSA made an official visit to campus prior to being added to the institutional request list (IRL) with the NCAA Eligibility Center.

– Corrective actions taken: 1. Rules education and the official visit procedures shared with the entire baseball staff. 2. The student was immediately added to the IRL. 3. The notification contacts in the compliance system were updated to include the current staff members. 

3. Sport: Women’s Gymnastics (8/23/23)

– Summary: Coaching staff had contact with PSA prior to permissible date.

– Corrective actions taken: 1. Rules education regarding permissible date of contact for PSAs. 2. Recruitment ban for 14 days beginning with the first permissible date for this PSA. 

4. Sport: Women’s Basketball (11/8/23)

– Summary: The women’s basketball program added impermissible decorative items to the hotel room of a PSA who was on an official visit. 

– Corrective actions taken: 1. Rules education provided to the women’s basketball staff. 2. Head coach and associate head coach/recruiting coordinator provided with a letter of admonishment. 3. The women’s basketball team had their recruiting – person days reduced by four. 4. The institution declared the student ineligible and sought reinstatement.

5. Sport: Women’s Rowing (2/20/24)

– Summary: Assistant women’s rowing coach worked at a noninstitutional privately owned camp that did not meet the requirements of an institutional camp.

– Corrective actions taken: 1. Rules education and the official visit procedures shared with the entire rowing staff. 2. A letter of admonishment issued to associate AD, compliance. 3. For each prospective student-athlete in attendance, the impermissible contact counted as one (1) of the seven (7) permissible recruiting opportunities and the remaining number of permissible contacts reduced by one (1). 

6. Sport: Women’s Soccer (6/13/24)

– Summary: Associate women’s soccer coach mistakenly sent an email to women’s soccer prospective student-athlete prior to the first permissible date. 

– Corrective actions taken: 1. Rules Education will be provided to the Women’s Soccer Staff. 2. A letter of admonishment issued to associate women’s soccer coach. 3. The women’s soccer staff was prohibited from sending any recruiting materials to PSA for a period of two weeks following the first allowable date. 

7. Sport: Men’s Basketball (4/6/24)

– Summary: The complimentary admission for a student-athlete was sold on a secondary market ticket website unbeknownst to the student. 

– Corrective actions taken: 1. Rules education 2. Declared student-athlete ineligible and sought reinstatement. 

8. Sport: Women’s Basketball (4/19/24)

– Summary: SA, and team, hosted an OV during seven-day discretionary period following championship segment.

– Corrective actions taken: 1. Rules education for entire women’s basketball coaching staff. 2. One (1) additional flex day for all student-athletes who attended team dinner to be enforced during the 2024-25 season. 3. Two additional flex days for SA who served as official visit host to be enforced during the 2024-25 season. 4. A letter of admonishment against the compliance coordinator who approved the official visit.

9. Sport: Women’s Swimming (5/6/24)

– Summary: Swimming and diving head coach and assistant coach visited a transfer prospective student-athlete and mistakenly paid for the PSA’s meal valued at $32.

– Corrective actions taken: 1. Rules education provided to swimming and diving coaching staff. 2. Head coach and assistant coach were not permitted to participate in any recruiting activity for 14 calendar days. 3. Institution shall be limited to one off-campus contact per academic year with the PSA. 4. Telephone and electronic correspondence prohibited with PSA for seven days. 5. In-person contact with the PSA prohibited for 30 days following the violation. 6. PSA donated value of meal to a 501(c)(3) organization. 

10. Sport: Men’s & Women’s Swimming (5/8/24)

– Summary: The men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs conducted their end-of-year team banquet on a day that was designated to be a required day off during the nonchampionship segment. 

– Corrective actions taken: 1. Rules education provided to swimming and diving staff. 2. Since the violation was discovered after the conclusion of the season, the institution is requesting to apply a 2-1 penalty for all impacted student-athletes for the fall non-championship segment. The institution requested adding two additional required days off for the impacted student-athletes that cannot serve as other legislative off day requirements. Those students will have 16 additional days off. 

11. Sport: Men’s Golf  (1/30/24)

– Summary: A non-athletic staff member attended two separate meals in which prospective student-athletes were present.

– Corrective actions taken: 1. Rules education. 2. Reduction in recruiting days by two.
