The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees compensation committee approved the contract extension for Crimson Tide men’s basketball head coach Nate Oats on Monday.

Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne announced the new deal Friday, and it was approved by the board three days later. Oats’ contract is six years through March 14, 2030, and he is set to make $5 million in his first season and $7.55 million in the last year of the new deal.

Oats’ buyout for the first two years of his new deal (through March 2026) is $18 million each year if he leaves, and that is believed to be the highest buyout in the country, Byrne said. The buyout then drops to $10 million in March of 2027 and $4 million in March of 2028.

“I am excited and honored for the chance to extend my relationship with the University of Alabama,” Oats said in a statement. “I have said from day one, my family and I love this community, the city of Tuscaloosa and the University so I am thankful and appreciative for all the support we have received from President Stuart Bell, Chancellor St. John, The Board of Trustees and Greg Byrne.

“We have enjoyed tremendous success during our five years at Alabama and we look forward to building on that for many years to come.”

In addition to Oats, two of his assistant coaches also had new contracts approved. While Austin Claunch will be the head coach at UTSA next season, Alabama assistants Ryan Pannone and Preston Murphy received new deals that were considered by the UA board.
