The Alabama Crimson Tide wasted no time making a move after the official opening of the transfer portal on Monday.

Moments ago, Pepperdine University guard Houston Mallette announced that he will be transferring to the University of Alabama. Mallette becomes the first addition for the Tide via the portal in 2024. He’ll head to Tuscaloosa with a year of eligibility remaining.

As a junior, Mallette averaged 14.7 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game. He shot 43.1 percent from the field, and an outstanding 41.5 percent from distance in the 2023-2024 season. That percentage from beyond the arc came on 5.1 three-point attempts per game.

Arguably Mallette’s top performance of the season came against Indiana State on Nov. 22. He scored 31 points in that contest on 12-of-20 from the field, and 5-of-6 made threes. He also recorded five rebounds and five assists in that matchup.

Mallette’s junior year campaign came to an end earlier than expected. He sustained a hyperextension in his knee against St. Mary’s last month, and missed the final two games of the season.

In three years at Pepperdine, the 6-foot-5, 185-pound guard scored 1,295 total points. He was named to the West Coast Conference All-Freshman team in 2022, and was selected to the 2023-24 WCC Honorable Mention Team.

A native of Santa Monica (Calif.), Mallette was a four-star prospect and the No. 10 combo guard coming out of high school, per the 2021 On3 Industry Rankings. Mallette played three years at Pacifica Christian High School in Newport Beach, Calif., and was a 2021 McDonald’s All-American nominee.

Alabama basketball is continuing to work the phones ahead of their 4-13 matchup with Charleston on Friday. On3’s Joe Tipton reported on Tuesday that Bama has also initiated contact with a transfer portal forward. BamaOnLine will continue to have the latest on Alabama’s efforts in the transfer portal on the BOL Round Table.
