The 2022-23 Alabama basketball roster took yet another hit on Wednesday evening, as backup point guard JD Davison announced that he’d enter the 2022 NBA Draft. The freshman five-star out of Letohatchee (Ala.) shared the news of his departure via his Instagram account.

For most Crimson Tide fans, this decision from Davison doesn’t come as a surprise. In fact, it has been expected for some time. Some felt he needed to return to Tuscaloosa for at least one more season, but many NBA evaluators believe he’ll still be a first-round pick on June 23.

In his lone season at Alabama, Davison averaged 8.5 points, 4.3 assists and 4.8 rebounds while averaging 25.8 minutes per game. Of the 33 total college games played, he only started five of them. Granted, that was mostly the result of veteran Jahvon Quinerly topping the depth chart at point guard.

For those who are unable to read the post on Instagram, here’s the entire statement from Davison:

“First I want to thank God for blessing me with the privilege of playing the game. I fully recognize how fortunate I am to be in this position, because it would not be possible without Him.

To Mom, Dad, my brothers, family and friends — thank you for supporting me and loving me every step of the way in this journey. The sacrifices you all have made along the way mean more to me than you know.

“To my teammates: I couldn’t have asked for a better group. We pushed each other every single day and I’ll forever be grateful for the time we spent together.

“To Coach Oats, the entire staff, and the Crimson Tide fan base — thank you for believing in me. It was an honor to play in my home state and wear the Crimson. That wouldn’t have been possible without you all having faith in me. Thank you.

“With that said, I’ve decided to pursue my lifelong dream by declaring for the 2022 NBA Draft.

“I’m grateful to every single coach and teammate who helped me get here, and I’m ready to show the world what I can do at the next level.”

Davison is now the seventh of 13 scholarship players who has announced his intention to leave the program. Alabama is still awaiting similar decisions from Quinerly and fellow guard Keon Ellis. At this time, both are expected to join Davison in the draft.
