Alabama basketball to host Arkansas State, Bryan Hodgson
The Alabama men’s basketball team will host a familiar face during its non-conference slate this season. Arkansas State announced its schedule on Tuesday, and the Red Wolves will travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to take on the Crimson Tide at Coleman Coliseum on Dec. 4.
That will be a homecoming of sorts for former Alabama assistant Bryan Hodgson, who took the Arkansas State head coaching position after the 2022-23 season concluded. Hodgson followed Nate Oats to Tuscaloosa from Buffalo and spent the last four years with the Crimson Tide before landing his first job as a head coach. He was introduced at A-State on March 27.
“One of the many things I’ve taken with me from @nate_oats is his scheduling philosophy!!,” Hodgson said in a tweet. “Challenge yourself in the non-conference. Not much to gain from collecting wins at home against “lesser” opponents. We look forward to the challenges ahead, and we put together what we think will be the toughest schedule in Mid-Major basketball!! #Wolvesup #GTTL”
This season’s matchup will mark the third between Alabama and Arkansas State with the Tide owning a 2-0 record in the all-time series. The two teams last played in Huntsville, Ala., in 2016, which ended in a 67-52 Alabama win. The first-ever meeting between the Tide and Red Wolves occurred on Dec. 11, 1969, in Tuscaloosa, with UA claiming a 93-79 victory.

During the 2022-23 campaign, Arkansas State posted a 13-20 (4-14 Sun Belt) record and had a 2-11 record in games played away from its Jonesboro, Ark., campus. The Red Wolves faced an SEC team this past season, LSU, and lost to the Tigers, 61-52, in Baton Rouge, La.
In addition to this matchup, Alabama is set to play Purdue in Toronto, face Arizona in Phoenix, travel to Omaha to take on Creighton, face Ohio State and either Oregon or Santa Clara in the Emerald Coast Classic, play Liberty in Birmingham and play host to Clemson, Morehead State, Indiana State, South Alabama and Mercer, making for yet another difficult schedule.
The Tide needs one more game to complete its non-conference slate for the upcoming year.
