The Compensation Committee of the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees met on Friday and approved contracts for double-digit Crimson Tide coaches and staff members.

Most of the meeting focused on new deals for Kalen DeBoer’s coaching staff at Alabama. Eight returning assistants received new contracts, as all eight were set to expire in February of next year. Chuck Morrell was promoted to linebackers coach and earned a bump in pay.

The first contracts for Alabama’s two assistant coaching hires were also publicly released, as offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb will earn $1 million for each of the next two seasons, while new defensive backs coach Jason Jones will go from $250,000 in Year 1 to $450,000.

Grubb’s $1 million salary ranks outside the top 65 in assistant coach earnings, according to USA TODAY’s database, which led to a question from one of the board members on Thursday.

“He had an existing contract with the Seattle Seahawks that helped us in the structure of our compensation for him,” explained Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne. “And there are play-callers within the SEC that are in that range. So it was a market rate for us.”

In addition to the on-field assistants, two pillars of DeBoer’s program, Jeff Allen and David Ballou, also received 3-year contracts. So did general manager Courtney Morgan, who saw his salary jump to $825,000 in the first year of his new deal to $875,000 in the second.

Only one men’s basketball contract was on the docket, as Alabama assistant coach Preston Murphy was extended through April of 2027 and earned a raise to $675,000 annually.

There were only two on-field assistant coaches who did not receive new contracts – defensive coordinator Kane Wommack and quarterbacks coach Nick Sheridan. However, both agreed to 3-year deals last offseason, so their contracts are now as long as their colleagues.

Including Wommack and Sheridan, five Tide assistants are set to earn more than $1 million.
